“Will using mats at my entrance doors really make a difference?”

Ever hear the saying, “The best offense is a good defense?”  If you want to keep dirt and  soil from getting on the carpet in the first place,   using mats is a great place to stop dirt dead in its tracks.

Use both outside and inside mats or runners. The outside mats should be made to withstand sun and rain or snow. Placing them under an overhang or porch is ideal.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking the mats never need cleaning—they require even more attention than your carpeting. Vacuum them  often.

With matting, size does matter!  They should be big enough to fit the width of the door. Also, be sure the mat is long enough to catch at least two ‘footfalls’ or steps on to it.

Golf shoes and cleats can wreak havoc with your mats—they’re great on the course or the field, but they inherently carry grass and soil along with them when they enter the house.

Mats are just a smart investment.  Be sure to ask us to clean them deeply and thoroughly for you next time we clean your carpeting.

“What Kind Of Carpet Should I Buy?”

This is a toughie… it’s like asking, “what kind of car should I buy?” Actually, the answer to either question would be: How do you plan on using it?

With regard to carpeting, ask yourself these two questions: (1) In which room will you be installing it and (2) what kind of use will it get?

Most retail carpet stores will NEVER ask you these two questions. Why? All they want is to make the sale. They simply do not care if you make a good choice for your home or not.

Here are some things you should know:
Buy a good pad — denser is better – 6 pound weight is the minimum.
Check the warranty. The longer it is, the better quality carpet you will get.
100% nylon fiber is best for busy households with kids, pets and messy husbands.

Berber carpet is the weave of a carpet, it’s not the fiber type. Most Berber weaves are made of olefin. It looks great in the store but I can’t recommend it.

Please feel free to call me with ANY questions!

“Why do spots return after they are cleaned?”

In a word… wicking.

Whenever you spill something on your carpet, it ends up in the backing. So the spot you see that’s about the size of a baseball is really the size of a dinner plate on the bottom.

Here’s what happens when you clean it:

If the backing (where the stain really is) gets wet while cleaning, it will cause the soda, kool-aid, etc. to wick back up the carpet fibers and become visible again as it dries.

Best suggestion:  Don’t over wet the spot while cleaning — it will create this vicious cycle over and over again.

Some carpet is more susceptible to this happening. Berber is one of them. Because the carpet fibers hold a lot less moisture (than say, nylon), most of it goes to the backing.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing — It’s just easier to reactivate the spot. This is also why Berber carpet takes longer to dry after deep cleaning.

If a spot returns after WE clean your carpet, we’ll  talk you through it – or come back to take care of it for you.  That’s Clean… Guaranteed!

All Carpet Cleaners Are The Same… Aren’t They?

Three questions you MUST ask any carpet cleaner before they set foot in your home:

1. Are you IICRC certified?  This is important for many reasons. Here are two:

First: The carpet mills now REQUIRE that you have your carpet cleaned at least every 12 – 24 months and that it’s cleaned by an Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Inspection certified technician.

Second: A certified carpet cleaner means he really knows what he is doing.  You will get professionally cleaned carpeting and  upholstery.

2. Do you guarantee your work?  If he cannot offer a 100% No-Risk Guarantee, then what does HE have to lose by taking your job? Absolutely nothing.  You, on the other hand, can be left with a big mess after he leaves.

3. Will you inspect my carpet and give me an iron-clad price BEFORE you clean?  Most don’t want to bother doing a pre-inspection.  Since they don’t guarantee their work, inspecting what will be cleaned ahead of time isn’t an issue for them.

If they cannot answer ‘yes’ to these questions – HOMEOWNER BEWARE!

“Why can’t I just clean my Carpeting myself?”

You can do it yourself. Here’s how:

This is what Shaw Carpets, the largest carpet manufacturer in the world, recommends for DIY cleaning:

1. Make sure the carpet will dry quicklyThe cleaning equipment you select should have enough vacuum power to allow the carpet  to dry within 6 to 12 hours after cleaning. Units that do not have the power to extract the cleaning solution from the carpet adequately may actually damage the carpet due to over wetting.

 2. Do not use excessive detergent Use a cleaning solution with a pH less than 10, preferably near 9. The attraction between the detergent and the soil and oil particles is critical during the cleaning process. However, if it isn’t rinsed completely, the buildup of detergent residue is the most common cause of accelerated re-soiling complaints. Shaw also recommends a clear-water rinse after cleaning.

3. Know your warranty guidelines Carpet with stain resistant treatments must be cleaned with products formulated for this purpose, or the stain resistance will be impaired and the warranty voided. Do not use cleaning or spotting solutions that contain bleaches or optical brighteners.

OR… it would be a whole lot easier (and safer) to have the pros at Commander Carpet Care do it for you.
