“Can you recommend a carpet cleaning solution for getting spots out?”

First, let me tell you what NOT to use.

Most department store products – think Spot Shot and Resolve – can actually create more problems for you than solve your spotting issues. Many pro carpet cleaners will have you sign a release form before cleaning your carpet if you have used any DIY products. Often these chemicals do not mix well with the cleaning agents used by professionals – and damage can result from the residue these chemicals leave behind when we begin the cleaning process.

Is Your Flooring a Commodity or an Investment?

Would you be surprised to learn that flooring is your third largest single investment?

FLOOD EMERGENCY! What should you do??

Here in the Midwest (IOWA) freezing temperatures can wreak havoc in a variety of ways. Several in particular are freezing pipes that burst, sump-pump failure + melting snow along with rain=equals disaster!

If This Happens To You, What Would You Do? 

 As usual, it happens without your knowledge and at the least expected time.

There are several things that you as a homeowner can do:

1. Check your sump pump the next time it rains to make sure that it is working properly.

2. If your pipes are exposed to extreme temperatures, wrap and insulate them.

3. If you’re going out of town for a few days, turn off the water supply, at least to the wash machine, if not the main supply itself.

4. Keep your thermostat at 65 degrees or higher.

If you should have the ‘unfortunate’ happen with a Flood Emergency, here are 6 things you should IMMEDIATELY do!!

1. Don’t panic. Immediately call a professional like Commander Carpet Care for your emergency water removal and a plumber if the source of water can’t be stopped by yourself. It’s important to mention, you don’t necessarily need to call your agent or insurance company first.
Take care of the immediate situation at hand then call your agent.

2. Make sure you stop the source of water, if possible.

3. If the water level is high, turn of the main circuit breaker and unplug all appliances in the effected area then turn the breaker back on.

4. Remove anything (especially valuables and memoir) that will be effected by moisture.

5. If you own a shop vac, use it to begin removing the water. It will help to minimize the damage. Never, ever use a household vacuum cleaner to remove the water.

6. Start making a list of damaged items to turn into your adjuster. If you wait until later, you may forget something.

“How can I tell if my carpet needs to be cleaned?”

If you can’t remember what color it used to be… it’s probably time to clean your carpet.

Seriously… ALL carpet manufacturers recommend cleaning your carpet every 6 to 12 months and they REQUIRE you to clean it at least every 18 months – 24 months.

If you have kids and pets, you may want to clean more often.  Although children are wondrous  beings with a special gift for bringing joy into your life, they also bring something else – kid crud.

Kid crud is all that stuff that gets dragged into your beautiful home that can damage the fibers and shorten your carpet’s life.

If left to it’s own devices,  this soil and grit will act just like sandpaper and the abrasion will  eventually permanently damage your carpet fibers

Quoting the carpet mills again, the best way to clean your carpet is use hot water extraction AND have an IICRC certified cleaning technician do the cleaning for you.
